SWF SPOTLIGHT

Join us for an electrifying show packed with new jazz talent. Building on the success of our traditional music showcase at Edinburgh Tradfest (ETF Spotlight) we aim to do the same for Scotland’s burgeoning jazz scene.

This concert features the following up and coming combos …

ROSALIND ORR TRIO

Having performed a sold-out show at the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival earlier this year, Rosalind Orr presents a new trio featuring guitarist Alex Handyside and bassist Timmy Allan. Still studying together on the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow, these young musicians continue to make a name for themselves within the Scottish jazz scene.

Born in Edinburgh in 2003, saxophonist and composer Rosalind Orr has been immersed in music since the age of 5, picking up the saxophone at 11. Moving to Glasgow at age 17 to study jazz at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, she currently studies under some of the country’s most acclaimed musicians.

In 2022, Rosalind travelled to Italy to take part in the European Jazz Workshop: an international project bringing groups of promising young jazz students together to improvise, compose and perform. More recently, she was interviewed and played on Radio Scotland’s Jazz Nights as part of their ‘Sound of Young Scotland’ programme.

TAO

Led by drummer and composer Roan Anderson, TAO is a group of close friends from Glasgow's vibrant jazz scene. After releasing their debut album last year, they done a mini tour of Scotland, gaining recognition on BBC Scotland’s Jazz Nights and being named “ones to watch in 2024” by Vic Galloway. Their music also received airplay on Soweto Kinch’s BBC Radio show 'Round Midnight' and Bandcamp Weekly Radio.

Featuring Glasgow's top emerging talent—Ewan Johnston on keys, Liam O’Neill on trumpet, and Chris Quinn on bass—TAO’s music explores themes of self-discovery and emotion, blending jazz with infectious grooves and soulful melodies.

Now, with more time to focus after graduating from the Jazz course at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Roan is writing TAO’s next works.

C.A.L.I.E

C.A.L.I.E’s sound epitomises the word 'eclectic.' Band leader, Josie Girgis (alto/soprano sax), loves taking deep dives into genres such as trad, metal, neo-soul, and jazz (of course). Naturally, her music reflects this.

A focal point of C.A.L.I.E’s music is its ambitious nature, born from Josie's motto, “Why waste an opportunity to be creative?”

In addition to Josie on sax, C.A.L.I.E’s full line up for the Spotlight show includes Kevin Henderson on guitar, Mark Hendry on bass and Greg Irons on drums.
